Liner Notes by Jim Ridl
Oh what a challenge it is these days to be a patient, attentive and engaged listener! To have an uninterrupted singular experience lasting one hour is nearly unheard of. We are wirelessly connected to an unending supply of quick, visual pleasures in rapid multiplicity; tidbits of information garnered out of context amid motifs of music that rarely extend themselves to the fullness of a completed phrase.
Ah, good news just in! What lies before you is a singular listening experience of both beauty and variation entitled Headspace, 11 original songs created and performed by the gifted composer and pianist David Bennett Thomas leading his ensemble of like-minded master musicians.
I charge you, the reader and listener, to put yourself in the proper Headspace as you would at a live concert and turn off your cell phone, relinquish conversation and simply listen from start to finish. As we know, a movement within a symphony can have its own individual performance separate from the whole but the deeper and more significant experience is in hearing the complete opus with all of the movements in order and in its entirety.
I believe you’ll find that lyricism, balance, questing, complexity, understatement, superb improvisations, and clear musical storytelling pervade this CD.
David Bennett Thomas, John Swana, Joel Frahm, Matt Davis, Micah Jones and Erik Johnson comprise an extraordinary ensemble and these players give remarkable individual performances throughout the CD. You’ll also realize why David is one of the leading composers of his generation. I enjoyed a most wonderful and fulfilling hour listening to this recording and I wish the same for you!
