Liner Notes
“Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.” 1 Chronicles 13:8
As a pastor and worship leader, it has been a special gift to have David Bennett Thomas as a part of my worship team at Goshen Baptist Church. Apparently this project originally grew from my simple invitation and encouragement to him on a Sunday to play the songs in his own style. He also tells me that when I introduced him to the song “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” this specific project began.
For David, the journey into the time - less melodies and sacred spaces of Chris tian hymnody is all about an encounter with God. He immerses us into the eternal rivers of God’s grace with the boundless creativity and rich resources of a seasoned jazz pianist and an adept composer. It is not worth trying to analyze these songs in order to under - stand their stylistic sources. These songs are offerings of pure devotion from the heart of a humble lover of God. David invites us to rest in the peace, love and joy that are found in his Savior. Without pretense or prescription,
David takes each song and discovers a new and wonderful way to be engrossed in the richness of a timeless melody and enfolded in the glorious praise of God. I am seldom moved to tears by instrumental music, but these songs that emerged in the context of Christian worship have stirred me over and over again. The deep currents felt in the vocals of Paul Jost, take us to new heights in “At The River” and “All Creatures of our God and King”.
No matter if you have known these melodies all your life or have never heard them before, you will be affected by these inspiring arrangements and stirring performances. At the heart of it is a man whose passion for God and exhaustless creativity have joined to give us a precious gift in this new recording project. For David, there is no higher praise than for you, the listener, to be drawn closer to Christ and nearer to God as you take this beautiful musical journey.
